It’s been 12 years since the last version of Canada’s Food Guide. I guess better late then never .. right?
Do Canadians even care that the new guidelines are out? Is there something new that we don’t already know as a society? Are there going to be groups and industries out there that are going to disagree and voice their opinions?

Out with the old: 2007 Canada’s Food Guide
No more serving sizes and recommendations
No more age categories and recommendations
No more milk and alternatives category
No more meat and alternatives category
No more juice
No more sweetened milk is considered a health food
No more recommendation of 2-3 tbsp of unsaturated fat each day
WHAT the 2019 CANADA FOOD GUIDE RECOMMENDS:
- Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods and protein foods.
- Encouraging more plant – based proteins: beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, peas, tofu etc. They are not discouraging animal protein, but encouraging more protein – based.
- Limit highly processed foods that have an excess amount of sugar, salt and saturated fats
- Make water your drink of choice – no more juice!
- Focus more on unsaturated fats vs saturated fats
- Cook at home more often, eat together with others and enjoy the food you have cooked
- Continue to read your food labels to choose healthier options
- Be aware of how food marketing can influence what foods your choose
All of these recommendations are common sense to me. I guess I am happy to know that there is research to back up my thoughts and beliefs of what we should be eating!
As a society, we need to be more mindful of what we are eating. We need to stop using the excuse that we are TOO BUSY and DON’T HAVE TIME to cook a healthy meal at home. We are just becoming lazy and using every excuse not to cook. It’s not necessarily because we don’t want to cook, but maybe we don’t know how or what to cook.
So my challenge to you this week/ weekend is search healthy meals on google, look through some cookbooks or share recipes with friends. It’s time that you reassess your cooking habits and make some changes for the positive!
