Did you know that only about 10% of people actually achieve their New Year’s Resolutions?
Most people lose interest of their goals after 4 weeks, more specifically if they have weight loss goals, because they expect a drastic change within those 4 weeks. So if they are not seeing the desired results, they will go back to their old ways and they will usually blame others for their lack of results. Little do they know, it takes on average 66 days to create a habit.
Why then, do a majority of people set new year’s resolutions? Is it just out of habit? Is it because we feel we need to reset who we are at the beginning of each new year? It is because some book or podcast told us to do so, and we won’t feel worthy unless we aim big, make changes or take chances?
I say it’s time to stop making new year’s resolutions. It’s time to stop making promises to yourself that you are not going to keep. I am not saying that you shouldn’t have goals, but instead of only focusing on the end result, let’s focus on the small steps each day that will get us there.
Instead, why don’t we focus on our intentions each day? Waking up every morning and being present with ourselves, our feelings, our behaviours and acknowledging what is going on around us. Being grateful for who you are and what is around you will also make you feel more grounded and stronger, which will help you achieve those goals that you are also aiming for.
So instead of just setting goals:
I am going to lose 50 lbs; I am going to climb a mountain when I’m 40; I am going to run a marathon …
Set an intention with them:
Each morning I am going to consciously choose to eat a healthy breakfast; I am going to enjoy the nature around me as I climb the mountain; I am going to work on my strength and speed each day which will help me achieve my goal of running that marathon; I am going to wake up every day, connect with my breath and say something positive about myself before I start my day.
So my wish to you in 2020, is to be present. Be kind to yourself. Do what you love. Fail and get back up again. Don’t dwell on the past. Set your daily intentions and remember that creating small habits every day will be WAY MORE beneficial in the long run and help you achieve your goals you have set.
